OPERATION RAJIV - IN THE SIACHEN GLACIER

 Summary

Paramveer Captain Bana Singh, a resident of RS Pura, Jammu, told about Operation Rajeev which ended on 26 June. Said that the enemy is at height. Our activities were under his supervision. Pakistani army was firing from helicopter to other activities. Even after this the Pakistanis were driven out.

Expansion

By occupying the highest and strategically important peak of Siachen, the Pakistani army was disrupting the activities of the Indian army. He declared the peak as a prison post named after Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. In May 1987, Lt. Rajeev Pandey and his patrol unit were attacked by Pakistani troops and several soldiers, including Pandey, were killed. Thereafter the 8 Jack Lai Battalion was given the task of re-capturing the enemy from the captured post, which was named Operation Rajeev after Lt Pandey.

Paramveer Captain Bana Singh said, the enemy was at its peak

Paramveer Captain Bana Singh, a resident of RS Pura, Jammu, says that the enemy was at its peak. Our activities were under his supervision. Pakistani army was firing from helicopter to other activities. We knew that it is not easy to climb a very high wall of snow to chase the enemy, but the word impossible has no place in the Indian Army.

We Would Climb When It Snowed Or Got Dark

Our contingent started climbing on 24th June to execute Operation Rajeev. When it snowed or it got dark, we would climb. While reaching from Sonam Chowki to Ked Chowki, we moved forward forming a strategic front. It used to take 8 hours to climb the peak, but due to the halts, the journey was completed in three.

When Confronted We Overpower The Enemy

When there was a fight, we defeated the enemy. We were the attackers and they were stunned. From grenade attack to hand-to-hand combat with the enemy, our unit killed the enemy. Captain Bana Singh said that even after 35 years, he believes that the victory in Operation Rajeev was made possible by a collective effort full of courage and valor. In this, there was contribution from the sacrifice of the martyrs to the blessings of the country.

There Was No Drinking Water On Siachen Glacier

Paramveer Captain Bana Singh said- We had to attack the highest front of the world. On the Siachen Glacier, we had to chase away the enemy who had entered at a height of 21153 feet. We were climbing a wall of snow more than 1200 feet high in blood-curdling icy winds. There was no water to drink. Put ice in the mouth for three days, moisten the throat a little and move forward.

Hungry For The First Time In Three Days

As soon as we reached the Quaid-e-Azam outpost declared by Pakistan on 26th June, our unit set out on the enemy on 23rd June. The stove of Pakistani soldiers was lying there. On checking, oil was also found in it, but we did not even have matchsticks to light the fire.

I Still Remember The Taste Of Those Rice

A young man from our unit crawled to the point of the ice wall to get matches where we had made a fire. It took us hours to cook their own rice by lighting fire from the enemy's stove. I still remember the taste of those rice.

Agneepath Yojana: Burnt Our House, Not The Property Of The Country

On the violent protest against the Agneepath scheme, Captain Bana Singh says that how effective this scheme proves to be, it will be known after four years, but the arsonists have burnt their houses, not government property. The passion of being a part of the army can never do such a thing. The common citizen of the country will have to pay compensation for the burning of property including vehicles, trains through tax. The youth will have to see the Agneepath Yojana more linked to the service of the country than the job.

Lieutenant General Said - Proud Of The Battalion

Retired Lieutenant General Satish Dua tweeted – 35 years ago my battalion attacked the highest altitude in the world. Climbed a 1200 feet high wall of snow on Siachen and chased the enemy away. Hundreds of salutes to all the heroes including Captain Bana Singh, awarded with Paramveer Chakra, Subedar Sansar Chand, awarded with Mahavir Chakra, Jai Durge.
